How to type a function

Write the right-hand side of y = (the y = itself is optional). Multiplication can be implicit — 2x and 3(x+1) both work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a four-quadrant coordinate plane?
Set Axes to “Centred”, leave the function boxes empty, keep Show axis numbers on, then Print / Save as PDF. You get a clean, numbered four-quadrant coordinate plane. For a quadrant-1 grid (positive numbers only), set Axes to “Corner”. The “Blank plane” preset does this in one click.
What size coordinate plane can I make — 10×10 or 20×20?
Yes. The grid fills the page, so the number of units depends on the grid size and paper you pick: 1 cm squares give roughly a 20×20 plane on Letter, while 2 cm squares give about a 10×10. Every square is true-size vector, so it prints exactly to scale on US Letter or A4.
Can I change the scale — what one square is worth?
Yes. Set the X and Y scale independently to any value from 0.25 to 100 units per square. Use a small Y scale (e.g. 1 square = 0.25) so a low-amplitude curve like sin(x) fills the grid, or a large one for steep curves like x³. Turn on “Show the scale key” to print a small note on the sheet saying what one square equals on each axis. The squares stay physically the same size, so it still prints true-to-scale.
What functions can I graph?
Any single-variable function y = f(x): polynomials (x^2 - 3), fractions (1/x), roots (sqrt(x), cbrt(x)), trigonometry (sin, cos, tan and their inverses, in radians), exponentials (2^x, exp(x)) and logs (ln for natural log, log for base-10, log2, or log(base, value) for any base). You can also use pi and e, and absolute value either as abs(x) or with bars, e.g. |1 - x| or log(|1 - x|).
How do I type powers, fractions and multiplication?
Use ^ for powers (x^2), / for division (1/x or (x+1)/2), and you can write multiplication implicitly — 2x, 3(x+1) and 2sin(x) all work, as does 2*x if you prefer. A leading 'y =' or 'f(x) =' is optional.
Can I plot more than one function at once?
Yes. Enter up to three functions and each is drawn in its own colour, with a small equation key on the sheet — handy for comparing a function and its transformation, or a line and a curve.
Is the printed graph paper actually to scale?
Yes. The grid is drawn as true-size vector squares (you choose 5 mm, 1 cm or 2 cm cells), so when you print at 100% with margins set to None, every square measures exactly that on the page — on both US Letter and A4.
Does it handle asymptotes like tan(x) or 1/x?
Yes. Where a function shoots off to infinity (the asymptotes of tan(x), 1/x, ln(x) near 0), the curve is broken cleanly instead of drawing a false vertical line through the gap.
