About this free printable graph paper

This generator makes free printable graph paper as a PDF — an even square grid you can print at home, school or the office. Unlike a fixed PDF download, you choose the exact grid: squares per inch (4, 5, 8 or 10) or a metric millimetre grid (2 mm, 5 mm or 1 cm), optional heavier major lines, the line colour, and the page size. Everything is drawn as crisp vector graphics, so the grid stays sharp and prints at its true size on both Letter and A4.

Common graph paper sizes

Grid size Square width Best for
4 squares / inch (1/4″) 6.35 mm The classic US maths grid
5 squares / inch 5.08 mm Engineering and lab pads (turn on major lines)
8–10 squares / inch 3.18–2.54 mm Fine grids for detailed plots
5 mm 5 mm Standard metric grid; bullet journaling
10 mm (1 cm) 10 mm Metric maths and larger diagrams

Graph paper vs grid paper

They are the same square grid. “Graph paper” is the usual name in maths and science, while “grid paper” is often used for note-taking, design and handwriting in Asian scripts. This tool covers both — set the square size you need.

What people use it for

Plotting functions and coordinates, engineering and architecture sketches, pixel art and isometric drawing, cross-stitch and knitting charts, bullet-journal layouts, board-game maps, and tidy handwriting. Because you can set any square size and print instantly, it replaces a drawer full of different pads.

How to print graph paper

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of graph paper?
The most common US graph paper is 4 or 5 squares per inch; engineering pads often use 5 squares per inch. In metric countries, 5 mm and 10 mm (1 cm) grids are standard. This tool lets you pick any of these.
What is the difference between graph paper and grid paper?
They are essentially the same thing — a square grid. 'Graph paper' is the common name in maths and science; 'grid paper' is often used for general note-taking and design. Both are generated by the same square-grid tool here.
How do I make graph paper in Word?
You don't need to. Making an accurate grid in Word is fiddly. Set the squares and size here, click Print and choose 'Save as PDF' (or print directly) — it is faster and the lines are perfectly even.
Should I use inch or centimetre squares?
Use inch-based squares (4 or 5 per inch) for US maths and engineering work, and millimetre/centimetre grids (5 mm or 10 mm) for metric work or bullet journaling. Switch the grid-size control to whichever you need.
What are the heavier 'major' lines for?
Major lines are darker lines drawn every few squares (commonly every 5). They make it easier to count squares and read coordinates at a glance. Turn them on or off with the major-line control.
Is it free, and does it work on Letter and A4?
Yes — completely free, no signup. Choose US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4, portrait or landscape, and the grid prints at its exact size.
